How Much Does It Cost to Develop Film in the UK? (2026 Prices)
How much does it cost to develop film in the UK? For a roll of 35mm, expect to pay around £5 just to develop it, and roughly double that with scans. Here's what you're actually paying for, the costs people miss, and how to keep film developing affordable.
Film isn't the budget hobby it used to be. A roll costs what it costs, and then it needs developing. So it's worth knowing where the money goes before you post anything.
I'll use our own prices as the example, because they're the ones I can vouch for.
Develop Only or Develop and Scan?
Develop only means you get your negatives back and nothing else. That suits you if you've got your own scanner, or you just want the negatives safe for later.
Develop and scan is what most people want: your negatives, plus digital files you can look at, share and print.
Here's what that costs per roll when you post film to us:
- 35mm: £5.49 develop only, £11.99 with JPEG scans, £15.99 with TIFF scans
- Disposable cameras: the same as 35mm
- 120 medium format: £7.99 develop only, £15.99 with JPEG scans, £19.99 with TIFF scans
JPEG or TIFF Scans?
JPEGs are about 2MB each. They're made for your phone, Instagram and small prints, and they're what most people need.
TIFFs are about 20MB each. They're for editing properly and printing big. If you're not sure, go JPEG. As long as you keep your negatives, a favourite frame can always be rescanned bigger later. There's more on this in JPEG or TIFF? Which scans to pick.
The Costs People Miss
The price per roll isn't always the whole story. A few things to check with any lab before you send film:
- Return postage. Scans arrive by email, so they cost nothing to send. Negatives have to be posted back. Check whether that's charged per roll or per order. Ours is £4.99 per order however many rolls, or free if you collect.
- Postage to the lab. You pay to send your film in, so use a tracked service. On orders over £75 we email you a free prepaid label.
- Scan size. A low price can mean small scans. Check what you're getting before you compare.
- Prints. A set of 6x4 prints is usually an extra. Ours are £8 a roll.
How to Keep Film Developing Affordable
- Drop it in if you can. Lab prices are lower than postal ones because there's nothing to post or pack. In our Norwich lab, develop only is £4.99 and develop with JPEG scans is £10.99.
- Send rolls together. One return postage charge covers the whole order, and we take 5% off 5 or more colour rolls and 10% off 10 or more.
- Pick the right scan. Don't pay for TIFFs if your photos only ever live on your phone.
- Collect your negatives if you're local. That saves the postage.
- Use your points. Every £1 you spend earns 5 JSF points, and every 500 points takes £5 off colour develop and scan.
Does Low Cost Mean Low Quality?
It shouldn't. Affordable is good. Affordable and careless isn't.
The question worth asking any lab is whether a person actually looks at your scans. Here, every frame is checked and corrected by hand, so you don't get flat, untouched files straight off the scanner.
That matters because there's no one look to film, and a scanner left on auto is only guessing. There's more on what correction actually does in why we never leave scans on auto.
Every price we charge, including black and white, slides and prints, is on our prices page. When you're ready, send us your film from anywhere in the UK, or drop it in at the lab in Norwich.
