Push, Pull or Shoot Box Speed? The Film ISO Guide

Every week, somebody new to film photography discovers the concept of push processing. Usually it happens something like this: they post a shot on Reddit, someone comments "nice, what did you push it to?", and suddenly they're down a rabbit hole of stops, EI ratings, and ISO numbers that all seemed perfectly straightforward two hours ago. If that sounds familiar, this post is for you.
We're going to cover what box speed actually means, what push and pull processing does (and doesn't do), and - most importantly - when you genuinely need to worry about any of it. Spoiler: probably less often than the internet would have you believe.
What Is Box Speed? Box speed is simply the ISO number printed on your film's packaging - the number that Kodak, Ilford, Fujifilm, or whoever made your film determined gives the best overall results under normal development conditions. When you load a roll of Kodak Portra 400 into your camera and set your ISO to 400, you're shooting at box speed. That's it. That's the whole concept. The term "box speed" exists because photographers needed a way to distinguish between the manufacturer's intended ISO and the ISO you might choose to shoot at - which brings us to pushing and pulling.
What Does It Mean to Push Film?
Pushing film is a two-part process:
You shoot the roll at a higher ISO than the box speed - meaning your camera meters as if the film is faster than it actually is, giving it less light (underexposure). You tell your lab to compensate during development by extending the time in the developer, which brings back density to those underexposed frames.
Example: You load a roll of HP5 Plus (box speed ISO 400). The light is low. You set your camera to ISO 800 instead. You've just shot your film one stop underexposed. You hand it to your lab and ask for a +1 push. The lab develops it longer to compensate, and you get usable frames despite the difficult light.
The trade-off is that pushed film tends to have higher contrast, deeper shadows with less detail, and noticeably more grain. That's not necessarily a bad thing - a lot of people love the look. But it's always a trade-off. In stops:
ISO 400 pushed +1 = shoot and develop at ISO 800 ISO 400 pushed +2 = shoot and develop at ISO 1600 ISO 400 pushed +3 = shoot and develop at ISO 3200
Important: The whole roll has to be shot at the same ISO. You can't push individual frames. Once you commit to a push, every shot on that roll is shot at the higher ISO.
What Does It Mean to Pull Film? Pulling is the opposite. You shoot at a lower ISO than box speed (overexposing), then ask your lab to develop for less time to compensate. This reduces contrast, pulls back highlight detail, and can give images a softer, flatter look.
Pulling is much less common than pushing - partly because most shooting situations don't call for it, and partly because most people tend to underexpose film rather than overexpose it. Pulled colour negative film in particular can look a little flat and washed out in ways that aren't always flattering.
Does Push Processing Actually Change the Film's ISO? Here's where it gets a bit technical, and where a lot of beginners get confused. Strictly speaking, no. Pushing film does not make your ISO 400 film into an ISO 1600 film. What it does is compensate for the underexposure you introduced by shooting at the higher ISO. Shadow detail that was never captured cannot be recovered in development - pushing can only bring up the density of what was exposed.
This is why heavily pushed film always loses shadow detail. That information simply wasn't there to begin with. The real-world result of pushing can look very similar to shooting a native higher-ISO film - especially in black and white - but they're not identical, and the more stops you push, the more you'll notice the difference.
Push Processing for Colour Film: A Reality Check
This is where we'll say something some labs won't: push processing colour negative film is often less useful than people think. Colour negative film (C-41 process) is developed at a fixed temperature and speed. Pushing colour film is done by raising the developer temperature slightly - a method that works, but introduces colour shifts, especially in the shadows. A +1 push on Portra 400 in genuinely difficult lighting can be a lifesaver. But pushing colour film two or three stops for aesthetic reasons - to chase more grain and contrast - is rarely the most reliable way to get there.
For colour film, if you want more grain and contrast, you'll often get more predictable and pleasing results by scanning the normally-developed negative and adjusting in post. The latitude in modern colour negative films is remarkable - they're designed to be forgiving, and you'll frequently find there's more detail in the shadows of a "correctly exposed" negative than you might expect.
Black and white film is a different story. B&W is far more forgiving of push processing, the grain character often looks genuinely beautiful when pushed, and stocks like Ilford HP5 Plus and Kodak Tri-X have decades of evidence behind how they perform at +1, +2, and even +3 pushes.
The Case for Just Shooting Box Speed Here's the honest take: Film manufacturers spend serious time and resources determining the box speed. It's not a marketing number. It's the ISO at which the film performs best across its full exposure range - capturing the most shadow detail, the most highlight detail, and producing the most accurate colour. Every time you push film, you're introducing a trade-off. Sometimes that trade-off is absolutely worth it - when the light is genuinely too low and you need the exposure compensation, pushing is exactly the right call. But if you're pushing because you've read that everyone on Reddit shoots Portra at 800, it's worth asking whether the result is actually better, or whether it's just different.
For beginners especially, shooting at box speed gives you the most predictable, consistent results while you're still learning to read light and understand how your camera meters. You can always experiment with push processing once you know what your film looks like under normal development - because only then can you judge whether the push is actually doing what you want it to.
Start at box speed. Learn what your film looks like. Then push deliberately, with a specific reason.
When Should You Actually Push Film? There are genuinely good reasons to push - here's when it makes sense: You're shooting in low light and you've run out of options. Your aperture is already wide open. Your shutter speed is at the edge of handholding. The shot is too important to miss. Push it. You're shooting an entire roll in a specific environment. A gig. An indoor event. A night shoot. If you know in advance that the whole roll will be shot in difficult light, loading a faster film is ideal - but if you only have ISO 400, a planned +1 or +2 push is completely reasonable. You want the aesthetic, deliberately. Heavy contrast, gritty grain, lifted blacks - there's a whole school of black and white photography that embraces the pushed look as a creative choice. That's completely valid. Just make sure it's the choice you're making, not the choice you've fallen into by accident.
When Should You Pull Film? Honestly? Rarely. Pulling is useful if you've accidentally overexposed a roll - say, you shot an ISO 400 roll metered at ISO 200 - and you want to bring the highlights back down in development. It's also occasionally used creatively to get that soft, low-contrast look on a high-speed film you're shooting in bright conditions. But for most everyday shooting, pulling isn't something you'll need to think about. Colour negative film in particular handles overexposure very graciously - you can often shoot a stop or two over box speed and develop normally with excellent results.
What About "Shooting at 200 for the Look"? You'll see this frequently on analogue communities: people rating ISO 400 film at ISO 200 and developing normally. This isn't pulling (there's no development adjustment) - it's simply overexposing by one stop. For colour negative film, this is actually a reasonably common and legitimate technique. A stop of overexposure can give colour negatives a slightly richer, denser shadow range and is very forgiving on skin tones. It's worth experimenting with once you're comfortable with your results at box speed. For black and white, similar logic applies - slightly overexposing and developing normally (or pulling slightly) can give you smoother tones and reduced grain in a way that suits certain subjects. But again: learn box speed first. Then experiment from a position of knowledge.
How to Tell Your Lab About Push/Pull Processing If you decide to push or pull a roll, you need to tell your lab before they process it. Once a roll has been developed, there's no going back.
One important thing to be aware of: not all labs offer push/pull processing, and for colour negative film (C-41) in particular, it's less common than you might think. C-41 is a standardised process run at a fixed temperature and speed - many labs, including ours at Just Shoot Film, run a consistent C-41 cycle that doesn't allow for push or pull adjustments.
